How we rank Utah’s MSW programs
Utah forced a design decision no cost-first ranking could survive: not one of the four programs publishes a program-level tuition rate. So the 2027 Utah ranking measures the axis that actually separates the field — delivery format — with cost deliberately unscored. What the ranking measures, what it refuses to measure, and the guardrails that keep it honest. The ranking is at Best MSW programs in Utah for 2027.
The three constraints that shaped the ranking
Three constraints were set before a single point was scored. First, inputs had to be verifiable: the CSWE directory, university-published pages, handbooks, catalogs, and field manuals — nothing else enters the arithmetic. Second, cost had to stay out of the scoring entirely: zero of four programs publish per-credit tuition we can verify, and a ranking that invents prices isn’t measuring anything — it’s fiction. So tuition is not estimated, not scored, and the true-cost census says so in plain language. Third, Utah’s free-form delivery language had to be classified honestly: program sites say “fully online,” “hybrid,” “statewide campuses” — so we mapped each program to real format types (Campus, Online, Hybrid) and published the classification in the scoring code itself. USU’s 15+ campuses are campus delivery, not a separate format; pace labels (“two-year,” “20-month”) and field-hour totals are not formats either.
The guardrails
- Verified inputs only. CSWE directory, university-published pages, handbooks, catalogs, field manuals, DOPL rules. No surveys, no estimates, no invented outcomes.
- Published weights and classifications. 50 for accreditation, 30 for confirmed formats, 20 for public access — plus the per-program format classification, all in the open.
- Limitations in print. The ranking page lists what it can’t tell you: teaching quality, field placements, real cost, your personal fit.
- No pay-to-rank. Programs cannot buy placement. No sponsored tier, no featured slot, no advertiser input on scores.
What we still won’t do
We won’t rank on reputation, selectivity, or research prestige. We won’t score tuition we can’t verify — the true-cost census exists precisely so the money question gets answered without corrupting the ranking. We won’t let the classification go stale: formats change, programs evolve, and each census re-verifies the list. And we won’t pretend the ranking knows your life — the regional guides in our guides section still do the personal half of the work.
