Utah MSW FAQs
Straight answers to what prospective Utah MSW students ask most — cost, accreditation, online study, licensing, and admissions — each backed by the verified census.
Frequently asked questions
How many MSW programs does Utah have?
Four verified — and every one is fully CSWE-accredited: the University of Utah (Salt Lake City), Utah State University (Logan + statewide campuses), Utah Valley University (Orem), and Brigham Young University (Provo). Three are public; BYU is a private nonprofit.
What does an MSW cost in Utah?
That cannot be answered from public data right now: no Utah MSW program publishes a program-level per-credit tuition rate in current primary sources, so this census estimates no costs. Ask each school for its current MSW tuition in writing before comparing — see our true-cost census for the exact questions to ask.
How do you work out your figures?
This census applies a published-input rule: a fact appears only when the university has published it outright — credit totals from catalogs and handbooks, delivery modes from program pages, field hours from field manuals. Where a university doesn’t publish an input, we mark it "not published" rather than inventing one.
Does accreditation matter for Utah licensure?
Yes. Utah’s Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) requires an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program for both the CSW and the LCSW. All four census programs are fully accredited.
Can I earn a Utah MSW online?
Yes — the University of Utah confirms a fully online MSW option, and UVU runs a hybrid cohort (weekly Friday in-person in Orem plus async online). Utah State and BYU are campus-based in confirmed sources. Field education is always done in person at an approved agency.
I already have a BSW. Is there a shorter route?
Yes — advanced standing, if your BSW came from a CSWE-accredited program. The U’s advanced track is 45 credits and UVU’s is 38 credits. USU offers a one-year advanced standing option, but its credit total was not confirmed; BYU publishes no advanced standing track.
How long does a Utah MSW take?
About two years full-time on a traditional track — or 20 months in BYU’s lockstep cohort. Advanced standing shortens the degree where offered. Part-time plans vary; confirm current sequencing with each program.
Do Utah MSW programs require the GRE?
Most Utah programs don’t publish a GRE requirement, and the census only records admissions criteria where they’re officially stated. Check each program’s admissions page for the current cycle’s requirements before you apply.
How do I get licensed in Utah after the MSW?
First the CSW: a CSWE-accredited MSW, a passing ASWB exam score, and the DOPL application. Then the LCSW for independent clinical practice: 4,000 hours of clinical training in at least 2 years as a CSW (including 1,000 hours of mental health therapy) plus the ASWB Clinical exam. The full path is laid out on our licensing page.
What kind of work can an MSW get in Utah?
The steady demand sits in behavioral health and addictions treatment, school social work, hospitals and health systems, child welfare, and rural clinics across Utah’s counties. The LCSW opens independent clinical practice. We don’t publish salary figures — we’d rather leave a blank than print a stale number.
How do I know your numbers are right?
Every fact shows its source: credit totals link to catalogs and handbooks, accreditation to the CSWE directory and university evidence. This edition was last verified in October 2026 — programs change details yearly, so confirm current facts with the university before you enroll.
Which Utah MSW is the best — or the cheapest?
We don’t crown winners, and we don’t rank on price — no Utah program publishes the inputs. Use the ranking for verified format fit, the profiles for delivery and credits, and the true-cost census for the cost questions to take to each school; this site’s job is honest inputs, not picking for you.
